Long and Short-term Goal Setting

Setting goals is a powerful practice that can transform your dreams into reality.

When you clearly define your objectives and put them in writing, you create a roadmap that guides your actions and decisions.

Studies have shown that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them. For instance, a study by Dr. Gail Matthews at Dominican University found that individuals who wrote down their goals were 42% more likely to accomplish them compared to those who only thought about their goals.

By committing your aspirations to paper, you not only clarify your intentions but also hold yourself accountable, making it easier to track progress and stay motivated. Unlike last-minute goal setting, such as New Year’s resolutions, which often lack direction and sustainability, having structured long-term goals provides a clear vision and a step-by-step plan for success.

The Metronomics Personal One Page Plan

The Metronomics One Page Plan is a valuable tool that helps you create your path for the next 1, 3, and 10 years. The purpose of the One Page Plan is to provide a structured and straightforward approach to setting and achieving your long-term and short-term goals. Whether it’s advancing your career, improving your health, or nurturing relationships, setting and writing down your goals is the first step to holding yourself accountable to them.

6 Key Questions to Create Your Personal One Page Plan

  1. What are your personal core values?
    List 3-5 core values.
  2. What is your personal core purpose?
What are you most passionate about?
  3. Where do you personally want to be in 10 years?
Gut it out – write it down.
  4. Where do you personally want to be in 3 years?
Gut it out – write it down. Consider your fiscal goals as well as your 3-Year Highly Achievable Personal Goal. Where do you want to be with Family, Faith, Friends, and Fitness?
  5. Where do you personally want to be in 1 year?
Gut it out – write it down. Consider your fiscal goals as well as your 1-Year Highly Achievable Personal Goal. Where do you want to be with Family, Faith, Friends, and Fitness?
  6. What do you have to do in the next 90 days to achieve your 1-year goal?
Write down your 3-5 priorities in order of importance.

This plan should fit on a single page. Display it somewhere you’ll see it every day. Every 90 days (for example, at the end of March before April begins), review and update your plan with your current thoughts, and place it back in the same visible spot. Continue this process every 90 days.

The Personal One Page Plan helps you set goals based on your core values and passions, aligning them with where you want to be in 10 years, 3 years, and 1 year. Time flies, and without a clear direction and both short-term and long-term goals, we may never reach our desired destinations. So, don’t just set goals once a year—revisit and refine them every 90 days to stay aligned with your annual, 3-year, and 10-year plans.
